From fluffy Highland cows to striking Galloway and Hereford cross breeds, these gentle grazers have long played a vital role in shaping the landscape. Each year, around 3,000 cattle are turned out to graze the open commons and heathland by New Forest commoners — people with inherited or acquired rights to depasture their livestock on the land. Their presence helps maintain the balance of habitats and supports the rich diversity of plants and wildlife that the New Forest is known for. A variety of breeds of cattle roam the National Park, with Galloway and Hereford crossbreeds and Aberdeen Angus, all breeds being particularly popular for their hardiness. Our beef herd is mainly Aberdeen Angus. Cows and Calves are “Udderly” Amazing!! All our calves are born on the Forest, and without fail the mum’s always make their way home within a couple of days after the birth to show off their new babies!! So when we see them, it’s action stations as we need to get them in and give them a quick health check, ear tag them, sex them and register them. All cattle are ear tagged by law - this tag has our herd number and a individual cow number on it. This is used to update our holding registry and also used to register the birth with the British Cattle Movement Scheme. Each cow has their own cattle “passport” to record the animals movement from birth to death. If we have any boys, we castrated them. Bulls are not allowed to roam on the Forest, and aggression from cattle is rare. Harrowing removes dead thatch, lifts vegetation up and levels any mole hills. Its job is to allow air movement and root aeration which helps the soil to breathe and improves water infiltration. It reduces disease by exposing fungi and bacteria to sunlight which is essential for the health of the pasture. Timing is critical and ideally harrowing and rolling should be undertaken in dry, warm conditions, as the harrows break up and spread any droppings allowing them to dry out and kill any parasites and rolling alleviate soil compaction, promote better root growth, and create a smoother surface for grazing livestock. The aeration effects of rolling can help break up compacted soil and improve water drainage, allowing nutrients to penetrate deeper into the ground. Harrowing should be carried out as part of any pasture management programme, in the spring preferably after grazing in conjunction with rolling. The line markings of harrowing and rolling are a true sign of spring! It originally started as a practical way of ensuring that the forest’s glut of acorns, which can be harmful to ponies and cows if eaten in quantity, were taken by the pigs. When the cattle disappear in search of fresh spring grass we may not see them for a couple of months, but within a few days of giving birth they wonder past the farm gate to present their new offspring. Very proud mum’s and great to see. What the mum’s don’t appreciate however is what we do next. Just like humans we have to register the calves birth and fit identification tags, and all the male calves need to castrated as we can not have young bulls running a muck in the forest. The process does not take long and before you know it, mum and calf are back in the forest but like all mum’s, they are protective and are keen to whisk them away. This includes wood. After many years the telegraph posts and timber rail sties lost their battle with pigs, who won triumphantly. What we then needed was some serious engineering! Pigs struggle with concrete and steel, it’s not conducive to their diet and spoils their fun. While the pigs looked on in pure disgust, after a few weeks of hard work, the new sties were built. which i was determined would last my life out, probably even my children’s. The final design has fulfilled everything needed for a pig sty. There is ample internal bedding space and feed area. Plenty of ventilation but with no drafts. Easy access into the field and forest at Pannage season, but most importantly, a simple system for moving the pigs around. Many hours of the day have been lost with trying to load pigs into a trailer. First setting up gates with bailing twine and then encouraging them in one direction when they were determined to go in the other. I generally never knew who got more stressed, them or me. We now have a simple gate system and the pigs can be moved without them even realising it. A new farrowing pen was designed and built. We have in the past let the sow give birth in an open pen, but sadly you do have casualties. The sow is big and the piglets small, unless they can get out of the way quick enough, the sow will accidentally lay on them. It is very upsetting and a waste of life. I don’t like farrowing pens,they restrict the sow’s movement and it is not natural. The new farrowing area gives her plenty of space to make her nest and to move around. It provides safe areas for the piglets to move to when mother is about to lay down and a heated area for the piglets to sleep.
